😮‍💨 The challenge

MKC (Mid Kansas Cooperative) is an agricultural co-op with 500 team members across 60+ locations. The organization partners closely with farmers across Kansas and neighboring states by providing hands-on support, local expertise, and trusted relationships to help rural communities thrive.

With 75% of its team in non-desk roles, MKC needed tools that worked for everyone - not just office-based teams. The company’s previous platform made it hard to access performance data or take meaningful action based on it. Team members found it unintuitive, and managers were overwhelmed by manual processes and limited visibility into key information.

We needed a platform our people would actually use. Just as important was having data our managers and HR could understand and act on.

The organization’s new career planning process reached a 97% completion rate from team members and full participation from managers. This gave MKC clear visibility into development goals across the organization — helping managers and HR better support growth.

Having 97% of employees complete our career planning process gave us a clear view into their goals. That made it much easier for managers to write meaningful development plans — and for us to connect what employees want with what we can offer.

Leapsome's analytics capabilities have also helped MKC better understand what's working.

When I see a manager doing really well, I ask what’s working so I can learn from their approach — and, if it’s relevant, share it with others.

🧭 A people-centered strategy

People are at the heart of every decision at MKC. As the agricultural landscape continues to change, the organization is thinking deeply about how to support its teams — not just for today, but for the future of work. That means balancing the power of technology with the relationships, trust, and development that real growth depends on.

I’m certainly excited for the future of work. We’re all going to keep working. I do believe that it’s likely we’ll all be in jobs that don’t exist right now, in five years.

I do believe that the future will always involve humans. If we do it right, the future will always involve relationships between humans.

AI will be used for data. AI will be used to support decisions. But we need to be very careful about removing the human element fully. Our ability to develop trust with one another, tell stories and paint a future, and help people understand goals and why we care about them, which is part of work. We need them to give us their time and talents.

MKC is continuing to refine how it supports performance and growth. The team is adjusting quarterly check-ins to keep conversations focused and relevant, using surveys to stay connected to team needs, and exploring new ways to make development more accessible and actionable.
